Burns is a very common problem in our country and every medical practitioner of any specialty has seen and treated such patients. On an average, about 7 million people get burn injuries every year out of which 1.5 to 2.0 lac die or get crippled due to the severity of burns. Burn injuries are on the rise in our country due to illiteracy and poverty with people not aware of the safe practices for cooking food.

It was another milestone in the history of Kidney transplantation at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, India. The department of Renal Sciences (Nephrology and Urology) at SGPGIMS added another feather in the cap of SGPGIMS, by doing ROBOTIC Kidney Transplantation of the Recipients. This is the first such surgery in the history of state of Uttar pradesh also. The lucky recipient is a 42-year-old female, resident of Barabanki who was diagnosed to have End Stage Renal Disease in 2019 in department of Nephrology by prof Narayan Prasad. She had been on maintenance hemodialysis since April 2019. Her mother agreed for the donation of a kidney to her daughter. She underwent work up for ABO compatible renal transplant for the immunological matching, which was perfectly fit and all matching were within acceptable limits, hence the transplant surgery was planned. The patient consented for the Robotic assisted Transplantation and Prof Aneesh Srivastava, the HOD of the department of Urology and renal transplantation and Dean of the institute very meticulously planned for the Robotic Surgery on 06th Aug 2021. The robust team of surgeons from the department carried out the procedure under the guidance and leadership of Prof Aneesh Srivastava. Dr.Rajesh Ahlawat ,a visiting surgeon and mentor for the event played a great role for the successful completion of the surgery. The Anaesthesia team under the leadership of professor anil agrawal and professor sandeep sahu were a great support for transplant surgery.
The day of 6th August 2021 become the page in the history of SGPGIMST by doing the first ROBOTIC Kidney Transplantation. The director of the institute, Prof R K Dhiman, was very keen to observe this day of the robotic surgery. The great academician and dynamic director has always been very keen to develop new treatment and techniques at SGPGIMS. More than 200 robotic surgeries have been performed by now in last two years despite all odds of COVID related issues.
The team of Nephrologists led by Prof Narayan Prasad was happy to see the brisk urine output post transplantation, and well settled recipient. The surgery was a huge success and the patient had a good post operative recovery. Professor Aneesh Srivastava and the team of urologists are extremely exhilarated and excited about the beginning of a new chapter with this latest state of the art technology .It must be mentioned here that professor Aneesh srivastava has mentored transplant programs in many medical colleges and other Govt. Institutions of the country including AIIMS Jodhpur, Rishikesh and other upcoming AIIMS. He is constantly supporting the Transplant programs in the RML Institute and the Command hospital of Lucknow for several years.
The Robotic renal transplant is a recent state of the art technique in the field of minimal invasive surgery which offers high precision to the surgeon and speedy recovery for the transplant recipients at some extra cost. This technique is extremely useful in overweight recipients, which could be challenging when done as an open technique. The robotic assistance provides easy access to place the transplant kidney in the abdomen with a very small incision and minimal post-operative pain as compared to the conventional transplant surgery. The incidence of fluid collection around the transplanted kidney which could occasionally be a menace is practically not seen with this technique.
The director congratulated the transplant team of urology, Nephrology , anesthesiology and other supporting departments and enthusiastic highly skilled paramedical staff of the institute for their untiring efforts and being a strong pillar to the patient care services.BJP national president JP Nadda along with Chief minister Yogi Adityanath and party’s national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh visited former UP CM Kalyan Singh at SGPGI on Thursday and enquired about the health of the veteran leader. UP deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma also accompanied the senior leaders. Nadda and Santhosh specially flew down to Lucknow to meet the ailing leader who was admitted to the ICU of SGPGI last week.
Nadda said: “Since the time the news about Kalyan Singhji’s ill health came, I felt that I must visit him. Even the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is concerned about him. I am happy to learn that he is stable and responding well to the treatment and hope that he recovers fast and returns to public life soon.
Nadda added that he spoke to the doctors at SGPGI at length and realised that the line of treatment was the best that can be given to the former CM and former governor of Rajasthan. “I am sure that he is in safe hands,†the BJP chief said.
Earlier, an official statement from the institute said that the condition of Kalyan Singh was better.
“The condition of Kalyan Singh, who is admitted in ICU of Critical Care Medicine, is improving. He is haemo-dynamically stable. The veteran leader has started responding to the commands and tried to communicate with the staff engaged in his care,†SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman said in a statement.
A Memo of Understanding was signed between Prof. R K Dhiman, Director, SGPGI and Prof. Harish, Dean, Research, IIT, Kanpur today on 29th June, 2021 for collaboration in Telemedicine and Heath Care Robotics. Through this MoU, SGPGI, Lucknow and IIT Kanpur agree to collaborate an R& D set up for promoting telemedicine aided by ICT and 5G that would revolutionize smart health care. Customized healthcare systems in the form of mobile vans will be made available to rural areas while smart Kiosks will be established within smart city framework to take care of medical emergencies.
Many parts of our country are still isolated and hard to reach and have limited health care facilities. Even in the urban and semi urban settings, smart health care facility is the need of the hour. This MoU will pave the way for collaboration between a clinical centre and an engineering centre. IIT, Kanpur is setting up a Centre of Excellence in Telemedicine and Healthcare Robotics to develop technologies that can provide such healthcare facilities as needed by our population.
SGPGI has rich experience in Telemedicine. The school of Telemedicine and Biomedical Informatics established in the year 2006 has rendered exemplary services in teaching and training of health care personnel and providing health care services to the inaccessible areas. With 20 years of experience of SGPGI in application-oriented telemedicine research, development and deployment, the collaboration will bring in a synergistic eco system to speed up the digital application in healthcare and capacity development.
Current Corona pandemic has made telemedicine technology very popular and useful tool to bridge the gap between care providers and citizen. So there is a need to develop indigenous technology platform and systems in large scale which can be affordable.
This Collaboration is going to yield immense benefit to the society.
SGPGIMS under the directives of Hon’ble Minister of Medical Education, Finance and Parliamentary affairs, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Suresh Khanna ji, has been conducting seminars on various aspects of healthcare and medical ethics. Another program in the series was conducted through Video conferencing on “COVID Vaccination: Challenges and Education for Vaccine Hesitancy†on June 26th 2021, from 12.30 to 1.30 pm. The session aimed to understand why there is still hesitancy among masses for vaccination as people are deciding not to get the COVID vaccines until more people have had them. Vaccine hesitancy can affect people of all ages and waiting too long to be vaccinated allows the virus to continue spreading in the community, with new variants emerging. Through the webinar, the need to educate people to inoculate themselves was stressed upon.
Director, SGPGI, Professor R K Dhiman, welcomed the speakers. Speaking on the occasion, Prof.Dhiman explained the need to get vaccinated to be fully prepared to face the third wave. “The message should be disseminated to the public also to get themselves inoculated and to maintain Covid appropriate behavior,†he said.
Prof Afzal Azim, Executive Registrar, introduced the speakers to the participants.
The webinar started with an educative talk by Lt. Gen.Dr. BNBM Prasad, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, KGMU on Government 's perspective on Covid 19 vaccination He said that the all the four types of vaccines are safe and effective and have very mild side effects. As health care professionals, we all have to spread the message to get vaccinated to contain infection as any pandemic has repeated waves. This can be controlled only by dedicated vaccination program.
Second lecture was on myths and facts about COVID 19 vaccination by Prof. Vikas Agarwal, Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. Dr Vikas cleared many myths related to the concept of vaccination. He said that one myth related to vaccine is that it is too fast to be safe, but the fact is that all the safety issues were taken care of and was approved by multiple independent regulatory panels. It is a general perception that once infected with Covid 19, vaccination is not needed. But fact is that in that case also, one must get vaccinated as per protocol ( after 14 to 16 weeks ) because targeted vaccine response may boost immune response. He also clarified that vaccine does not give covid 19 infection because none of the vaccines uses live virus. Pregnant women and lactating mothers can take vaccines. Vaccine cannot reduce the transmission of Covid 19, but with vaccination one would have lesser complications of disease.
The challenges, nursing staff faced in vaccination was shared by Ms. Neelam Khokhar, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, SGPGIMS. She elaborated on the vaccination program of SGPGI which started on 16th January and from there it took off very well.
Dr. Roopali Khanna, Department of Cardiology, SGPGIMS spoke on the importance of educating people to get them vaccinated. She said that she had to allay the anxiety and hesitancy of the people to get them vaccinated. People with fever, cold, cough, bleeding disorders are not advised to go for vaccination. People with co morbidities like diabetes, renal disorder must vaccine themselves. There may be minor symptoms of vaccination like headache, mild fever or malaise, but in case of high grade fever or seizures, one must contact the doctor.
Ms. Indu kumari, Lab Technician, Department of Gastroenterology, SGPGIMS, presented a lay person’s perspective on covid vaccination. She cleared the doubts of common people related to vaccination.
Lastly, Dr. Sonali Verma, Senior Resident, Department of Endocrinology deliberated upon CAB: COVID Appropriate Behavior which could act as a social vaccine and is the need of the hour in our country. "Maintaining 6 feet distance, wearing mask and gloves, using sanitizers, washing hands with soaps frequently form covid appropriate behavior. Habitual offenders must be warned to follow the guidelines as they can be instrumental in bringing the third wave. Sharing any unverified information related to vaccination on social media must be avoided," she said.
