Patient Care

The Department of Neonatology provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art neonatal care to critically ill and at-risk newborns from across the region and neighbouring states. The department has grown significantly over the years, expanding its infrastructure, clinical capabilities, and service reach to become one of the most advanced neonatal units in Uttar Pradesh.

Infrastructure & Inpatient Facilities

The department operates a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) comprising two distinct units — an Inborn NICU for neonates born within the institution and an Outborn NICU for referred neonates from outside — along with a dedicated Neonatal Ward for step-down and general newborn care.

 Clinical Services

Advanced Respiratory Support The department offers the full spectrum of neonatal respiratory care, including:

  • Non-invasive ventilation (CPAP, DuoPAP, HHHFNC)
  • Invasive mechanical ventilation
  • High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV)
  • Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO) therapy — the department is among the first institutional NICUs in Uttar Pradeshto introduce this advanced therapy for severe hypoxemic respiratory failure

Neonatal Resuscitation

  • T-piece resuscitator-based neonatal resuscitation, conducted by trained NRP-certified faculty

Nutrition & Metabolic Support

  • Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) prepared under laminar flow hood conditions, ensuring sterile, individualised nutritional support for critically ill neonates

Neonatal Neurology & Neuro-monitoring

  • Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) and EEG monitoring services
  • Therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) — among the first units in Uttar Pradesh to offer this service

Cardiac Care

  • Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TnECHO) / Point-of-Care Echo for haemodynamic assessment
  • Specialised pre-operative and post-operative intensive care for neonates with congenital heart diseases, in collaboration with the departments of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery

Diagnostic Services

  • Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) including cranial, lung, and abdominal sonography
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening, including bedside retinal photography for preterm infants — a recent new initiative
  • Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
  • Newborn Metabolic Screening
  • Bedside haematocrit and total serum bilirubin estimation by micromethod
  • Phototherapy and exchange transfusion for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Family-Centred Care

  • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) for preterm and low birth weight neonates
  • Structured perinatal and antenatal counselling services
  • Parental education and support programmes within the NICU

Surgical Neonatal Care

  • Comprehensive care of surgical neonates, including pre- and post-operative management in collaboration with Paediatric Surgery

Immunisation Services

  • Routine neonatal immunisation as per national immunisation schedule

 Outpatient Services

High-Risk Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic Long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up is offered to high-risk infants discharged from the NICU, including preterm neonates, babies with HIE, and those with significant neonatal illness.

Well Baby Clinic Routine growth and developmental monitoring for newborns and young infants.

Specialised Neonatal Clinics Disease-specific and condition-specific clinics for targeted follow-up of vulnerable neonates.

Hearing Screening Clinic Universal hearing screening is offered for all at-risk newborns, with referral pathways for further evaluation and intervention.

Antenatal Counselling Perinatal counselling is provided to families expecting high-risk neonates, enabling informed decision-making and preparation for neonatal care.
