Courses

The Department of Neonatology at SGPGIMS, Lucknow, is committed to excellence in postgraduate and super-specialty neonatal education. The department offers structured, rigorous training programmes designed to develop skilled neonatologists equipped with clinical expertise, research acumen, and a strong foundation in evidence-based practice.

Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) in Neonatology

Duration: 1 Year Seats: 6 per year

The PDCC in Neonatology was initiated in 2017 with 2 seats and expanded to 6 seats from 2018 onwards, reflecting the growing demand for trained neonatal specialists in the region. The programme provides comprehensive training in all aspects of newborn care, including advanced neonatal intensive care, non-invasive and invasive respiratory support, neonatal haemodynamics, neurology, nutrition, and evidence-based clinical practice. Trainees are exposed to a high volume and wide spectrum of neonatal cases across both the Inborn and Outborn NICUs, preparing them for independent practice in tertiary neonatal care settings.

Doctorate of Medicine (D.M.) in Neonatology

Duration: 3 Years Seats: 4 per year (recently increased from 2, following approval by the National Medical Commission)

The D.M. Neonatology programme was launched in 2019, making SGPGIMS the first institution in Uttar Pradesh to offer super-specialty training in neonatal medicine. The programme provides in-depth clinical, academic, and research training in neonatology, encompassing advanced NICU care, neonatal procedures, point-of-care ultrasound, targeted neonatal echocardiography, neuromonitoring, and research methodology. Following NMC approval, the annual intake has been expanded from 2 to 4 seats, significantly strengthening the department's contribution to building neonatal super-specialty capacity across the country.

Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP)

The department's faculty includes multiple National Instructors for the Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) India, recognised by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and the National Neonatology Forum (NNF). The department regularly conducts Basic and Advanced NRP training for postgraduate students, nursing staff, and healthcare professionals from the institution and across the region, ensuring a wide reach of life-saving neonatal resuscitation skills.

NNF SONIC — Sonography for Optimising Neonatal Intensive Care

The department serves as an active host centre for the NNF SONIC programme, a structured national training initiative by the National Neonatology Forum focused on point-of-care sonography in the NICU. Multiple hands-on training sessions are conducted annually, drawing participants from across the country for immersive, expert-led training in neonatal ultrasound.

NNF SHINE — Short Course for Postgraduates in Neonatology

The department regularly organises and participates in the NNF SHINE (Short Course for Postgraduates in Neonatology) programme, providing structured academic training to postgraduate trainees in neonatology from SGPGIMS and partner institutions including KGMU, Lucknow.

Neo-FLIP — Flipped Learning and Interactive Pedagogy

The department has pioneered the Neo-FLIP teaching model for its PDCC and DM trainees — an innovative pedagogical approach where faculty assign case-based discussions and structured academic tasks through Google Classroom. Students submit work online and are assessed against defined criteria, fostering independent thinking, self-directed learning, and deeper clinical reasoning. This initiative represents a significant step forward in postgraduate neonatal medical education in India.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) & Workshops

Beyond its formal degree programmes, the department is an active centre for continuing medical education, regularly organising national and state-level CMEs, workshops, and hands-on training programmes. Recent highlights include workshops on Neonatal Point-of-Care Echocardiography, Advanced Critical Care Monitoring, Neonatal Procedures, Neonatal Nutrition, and Neonatal Ventilation — attended by clinicians from across India.
