I have just learned that Dr. Arvind Baronia will be leaving SGPGI to join a medical college in Pithoragarh as a Principal. I am happy that
he has moved up the ladder, so to speak, but it brings back a ood of memories that I think it is my duty to share.

Many of you will take the Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM), housed in a separate building, with top-class design and
facilities, for granted, but the younger generation must be aware of the trials and tribulations that had to be overcome into the making
of this Department, and for which Dr. Baronia was almost single-handedly responsible.

I was fortunate to have been associated with a large part of this journey since the year 2000 (20 years!),
Dr. Baronia had a vision to create a Department of CCM in SGPGI. He had to ght numerous battles and to answer questions such as

• Is CCM a speciality at all?

• If it is one, who should be eligible to be a CCM specialist
• Is a separate Department needed?

• If we create a CCM super-specialty course, what are the future prospects for the CCM graduates?
• If at all we agree to have a separate Department, why should Dr. Baronia lead it? Why not someone else?

Believe me, it was not easy to navigate through these muddy waters. But Dr. Baronia not only had the vision and passion for the
specialty, but also the persistence, patience, and tenacity to overcome all such challenges to set up the Department of CCM. Getting a
separate building and setting up a multi disciplinary Department of CCM was an unparalleled feat in those days (and probably even
