• Departmental activities and services

      1.Renal transplantation

      The department performs more than 120 “live related” Renal Transplants per year. Approximately 450 arteriovenous access procedures and 150 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions are done annually. It is proposed to start Robotic Renal Transplant in the near future.

      2. Robotic Surgeries

      The surgical robot was introduced in 2019 and in less than one year, more than hundred cases of robotic surgeriesweredone successfully,most of which includeduro-oncology and paediatric urology procedures. All 5 faculty surgeons in the department are competent in robotic surgery.

      3.LaparoscopicSurgeries

      The department is doing 400-450 laparoscopic procedures every year that include donor nephrectomy for kidney transplant,all kinds of nephrectomy, ureterolithotomy, pyelolithotomy, pyeloplasty, pediatric laparoscopic procedures etc. Department has done more than 2000laparoscopic donor nephrectomies till date which is one of the highest numbers performed in single center in India.

      4.Retroperitoneoscopy

      Retroperitoneoscopic surgery is being done routinely for complex renal tumour with posterior location, simple nephrectomy,ureterolithotomy and decortication of renal cysts, etc.

      5.Uro-Oncology work

      Department is one of the leading centers for Uro-oncology work for all types of genito-urinary cancers including kidney, bladder, prostate, testis and penile. Major surgery like Radical cystectomy with orthotopic neobladders, RPLND for testicular tumor, Inguinal block dissection for carcinoma penis, Radical prostatectomy and radical nephrectomy with IVC thrombus extraction etc. on a routine basis. Department has started doingRobotic radical cystectomy and urinary diversion to give all the advantages minimally invasive surgery. Chemotherapy for the genito-urinary cancers are administered under observation.

      6.Pediatric urology

      SGPGI is the first institute in India to have a dedicated pediatric urologist doing complex surgery for bladder extrophy, Hypospadias, Epispadias, Ambiguous genitalia and various Laparoscopic and Robotic surgeries in pediatric patients. The division of Pediatric Urology at SGPGI is one of the most reputed referral centres in northern India.

      7.Endo urology

      Procedures like PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy), RIRS, Ureteroscopy and TUR of prostate, TURBT of Bladder Tumours and Endoscopic removal of Bladder Stones, and Optical Internal Urethrotomy, are most commonly done regularly as standard of care.

      8. Stricture urethra surgery

      Department has expertise of doing complex urethral stricture surgery ranging from vascular pedicled graft to buccal mucosa/ skin graft urethroplasty.

      9. Uro-gynaecology

      Treatment for Urinary Fistulae (VVF, UVF), Stress Urinary Incontinence, Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection are being done on a regular basis.

      10.Stone Centre

      Around 2500 investigational and therapeutic procedures per month are done in stone centre which includes BCG instillation, Chemotherapy administration, TRUS biopsies, Cystoscopy, Cystograms, RGU-MCU, CMG, UFM – PVR, SPC insertion.
