The department of Urology & Renal Transplantation commenced its clinical work instate eighties. Unique clinical activities include various types of surgical procedures like reconstructive urology, female urology, procedures for renovascular hypertension, uro-oncology, renal transplantation, andrology, endourology, pediatric urology and minor day care procedures conducted in operation theatre and stone centre.
The department has state-of-the-art Endourology program with a Holmium Laser and 80 watt KTP green light laser for stone and prostate surgery. Percutaneous surgery in kidney, ureter and bladder and Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) are being performed with excellent outcome.
Various out patient diagnostic services are being provided viz., urodynamic study,urn-radiological procedures, trans-rectal ultrasound and cystoscopy. Operative microscope for male and female infertility surgery and dedicated C-arms for fluoroscopy are also available.
The department has an honor of carrying out maximum number of laparoscopic procedures in India. It is regarded as the best centre for M.Ch training program and has four dedicated operation rooms with latest surgical gadgets.
The department has been the first to establish pediatric urology as a sub- specialty in India and caters to children with complex problems of urology like hypospadias, intersex surgery, extrophy, epispadias, malignancies and stone disease in children.
The department is a well established center for transplant program and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. It runs one of the largest renal transplantation program in the country performing about 100 live related transplants per year. It has the distinction of being a pioneering centre for the development of laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy in India. The greatest milestone it has achieved so far is to cross the figure of more than 2500 renal transplant since its inception.
The department is also a referral centre for complex urological diseases. It has to its credit for carrying out maximum number of radical cystectomy with orthotropic neobladder for carcinoma with a modified technique of pfannensteil incision giving all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery. Urology department has done partial Siamese twin kidney surgery which was first of its kind in the world literature where a kidney was retrieved from a non-developed part and grafted after reconstruction into a recipient of renal failure. It was widely acclaimed in the urological fraternity and was also appreciated by the print and electronic media.
The department is aspiring to escalate its cadaveric transplantation program. Till date it has done three cadaveric transplantations which is a humble beginning in this direction. The department has started new treatment modality of neuro-modulation for neurogenic bladder patients. Since the modern treatment modalities of prostate cancer is taking over worldwide, the department is also exploring possibilities to establish a centre for Robotic prostate surgery in the near future.
