Kausik Mandal is a paediatrician turned clinical geneticist. He has around 20 years experience in treating children and 14 years experience in management of genetic disorders. During his MBBS, he had the overall highest aggregate marks in his batch and was recipient of class assistantship and gold medals in various subjects including medicine, pharmacology and obstetrics and gynaecology. He has received various awards like Santisuddha award and Prof Chunilal Mukherjee award for his academic proficiency during this period. He was the University topper and recipient of University honours in obstetrics and gynaecology during final MBBS. He was a top ranker (rank 16) at the All India MD/ MS entrance examination. During his MD, he received Dr. Sarla Vaishnava award for best paper in metabolic disorder in Annual Conference of IAP- Delhi; for his work “Homocysteine, Fibrinogen, and Lipid profile in children of young parents with coronary artery disease”. During DM training he received Conference Best Paper Award on Neonatal Health (Importance of neonatal examination in predicting outcome of future pregnancy) –VIII World Congress & XVI Indian Conference on “Reproductive and Child Health”. In clinical work, he has special interest in neonatal dysmorphology, teratogenic disorders, pediatric cardiac disorders like Noonan syndrome, lipodystrophies and disorders of growth, lysosomal storage disorders (like MPS II/ Hunter syndrome, Gaucher disease, Fabry disease), inherited neuromuscular disorders like spinal muscular atrophy and inherited pediatric kidney diseases. In laboratory work, he is proficient in molecular techniques like MLPA (Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification) and Sanger Sequencing. He has published works on intellectual disability, various monogenic disorders and familial cancers like VHL (Von Hippel-Lindau disease). Beyond work, he writes poetry and short stories, plays musical instruments like harmonica (mouth organ) and tabla, takes part in dramatics, plays table tennis and travels to hills and jungles on his cruiser motorbike.
