About Department

The department of Endocrine &Breast Surgery was established in September 1989, as the first academic department of Endocrine & Breast Surgery in India which offered opportunity for training in this specialty. The department is recognized as a pioneer in the clinical practice, training & teaching, and research in the areas of endocrine and breast surgery in India.

The department is credited with starting the first Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) in Endocrine Surgery in India in 1997, and later was the first one to start a MCI recognized MCh Endocrine Surgery Course in the 2004. Alumni of the department are currently involved in academic or institutional practice of Endocrine & Breast surgery in various parts of the country, and abroad. Most of them are professors, heads, faculty or senior consultants in various reputed teaching institutions or corporate hospitals in major cities of India.Though breast surgery practice, training and research are integral components of the MCh curriculum of the department from the very beginning, in order to cater to the demands for fellowship training opportunities in breast surgery exclusively, the department has initiated a Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) in Breast Surgery, starting in year 2020. Besides the MCh Endocrine Surgery and PDCC Breast surgery courses, the department also offers PhD Program and Short-term Trainee/ Observer positions for teachers of surgery and practicing surgeons.

The department has been organizing popular CME courses in endocrine surgery and breast surgery. The first Postgraduate Course in Endocrine Surgery (PGES) was organizedin year 1993 and subsequently being organized once every two years, in odd number years. The SGPGI breast courses are organized every alternate year (even number years) starting the year 2005, and have attracted enthusiastic and large attendance by young in-training as well as practicing surgeons.

Faculty members have carried out, and are currently involved with Clinical and Basic Research in fields of endocrine oncology-notably thyroid oncogenesis, parathyroid tumorogenesis, pheochromocytoma etc, breast surgery and oncology-including cost effective low-cost sentinel lymph node biopsy, genetic and pharmacogenomic studies in breast cancer, diabetic foot care and utilization of tele-medicine technology in endocrine surgical teaching, training and research. The department’s faculty and residents have to their credit large number of scientific publications in reputed indexed international journals.

The department offers a whole spectrum of clinical and operative services to endocrine and breast surgical patients, for which it has state of-art infrastructure, and expertise. The department attracts referrals from various parts of India, and neighboring countries for complex endocrine and breast surgical problem, and is acknowledged as one of few high-quality centers for oncoplastic breast conservation surgery, complex re-operative thyroid surgery, surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism, pheochromocytoma and other adrenal tumors, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes etc. The department has pioneered minimally invasive endocrine surgical procedures, notably laparoscopic adrenal surgery, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) thymectomy: and sentinel lymph node biopsy and conservation/oncoplastic breast surgery in the country. While endoscopic thyroid surgery has been practiced for past many years, the department has recently initiated robotic thyroid surgery too.
