About Department
Department of Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) started function in year 1988 and gained momentum from 1989 thereafter the productivity has consistently increased. Every year, the department performs over 800 surgeries on the cardio-vascular and thoracic system out which about 650 comprise of open-heart surgeries and coronary artery bypass surgeries. The department has active programs in pediatric and Neonatal Surgery beating heart surgery, minimal access and vascular surgery including endovascular surgery. The department has also developed a dedicated program in thoracic surgery, which got an impetus after creation of pulmonary medicine department.
The department has had many firsts to its credit. The first neonatal heart surgery and first stem cell injection for treatment of myocardial infarction in the state of UP was done in this department. The department has been the first to embark on beating heart surgery in UP as well as valve repair program. The endovascular grafting for abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery, valve surgery, closure of atrial septal defects and hybrid coronary surgery were started for the first time in the state. Clinical services are provided in the areas of pediatrics and neonatal cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, beating heart surgery services, minimal access cardio-thoracic surgery and coronary artery surgery.
Apart from the clinical activities the department of CVTS has been actively involved in teaching, training and researchactivities. There is a recognized MCh (CVTS) training program, which trains two students every year. The department also trains non-MCh residents every year most of whom go on to do MCh from various premier institutions of the country. The students from this department have proved themselves to be leaders in the specialty and are working at various reputed centers both in India and abroad. The department has an active research program and has published papers in National and International Journals.
The future plans of the department include neonatal cardiac surgery, Cardiac assist devices like ECMO, VAD etc. heart-lung transplantation, homograft valve bank program, advance thoracic and vascular surgery program and stem cell therapy in various cardiovascular diseases.
VISON & MISSION
The Department of CVTS routinely performs surgery for congenital heart diseases, arryhythmias and valvular heart diseases. Apart from open heart and major cardiothoracic surgeries, the department has been doing Minimal Access Cardiac Surgery including Minimal Access Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery. The Department is in all its earnestness, working towards surgery for heart failure patients. In addition to Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery M.Ch. program, the department has successfully commenced 1-year Post Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) courses. The department has also started Neonatal Cardiac Surgery and Robotic Cardiothoracic Surgery.
