The Department of Pathology was established to provide diagnostic laboratory facilities, training to medical and paramedical personnel and to conduct problem oriented medical research. The Department was started in August 1987 and teaching and academic activities including Clinico-pathology sessions were started in 1990.
The department provides a wide range of laboratory investigations in Surgical pathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology and Clinical chemistry. The department has state -of the -art equipment in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and automated analysers in hematology, coagulationand urinalysis laboratories. Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and frozen section, liquid-based cytology facilities are also available. The Clinical chemistry division provides general chemistry, special chemistry including tumor markers and drug monitoring levels. Molecular testing including FISH analysis for solid tumors in breast, lung, gastrointestinal pathology and central nervous system is also available. The department is also equipped with transmission electron microscope for patient service and research.
The department conducts a regular M.D.(Pathology) program since 1998 and currently admits four students per year. The department also conducts regular interdepartmental clinico-pathology teaching sessions in neuropathology, pulmonary pathology, gastro-intestinal and hepatic pathology, endocrine pathology, tumor pathology,renal pathology, immunopathology, hematopathology and uropathology, in collaboration with various clinical disciplines.
The Department of Pathology has taken a lead in initiating education in sub-specialty Pathology in the country by starting first ever post -doctoral certificate course (PDCC) in Renal Pathology in 1997. A PDCC in Hepato-pathology has also been started. The department offers several short-term observer ship programs for students and practicing pathologists.
