About Department
The Department of Neurosurgery currently has 12 faculty members and 7 post doctoral fellows(PDFs). It has had a total of 24 faculty members between the years 1995 to 2019. The list is inclusive of 2 neuro-otologists and 3 neuro-opthalmologists who were members of the department.
The department has an intake of 6 post MS (General Surgery) senior residents for a 3 year MCh training programme and 6 senior residents for hospital services per annum. The neuro-otology subspecialty inducts two senior residents for a 3 year dedicated training and 2 PDCC in neuro-otology and cochlear implant programme.
The department conducts 5 neurosurgical Outpatient clinics per week {( Monday to Friday; 9 a.m. onwards) excepting on Institute holidays}.The specialized areas in which focused services are offered include : Pediatric Neurosurgery, Cerebro-vascular surgery, Skull Base surgery, Surgery for peripheral nerve injury, Neuroendocrine surgery, Neuro-Oncology, Surgery for complex spinal disorders and minimally invasive spine surgery, Image guided and Endoscopic surgery, Functional, Epilepsy and Stereotactic surgery, Neurosurgical intensive care services and Neuro-Otology(including cochlear implants). The number of OPD patients has increased to nearly forty thousand in a year.
The department has a well organized and computerized services for admission, billing, record keeping and discharge of every patient admitted to the department.
Approximately 2500 operations are being performed every year.
We have 91 beds in the department with 100% occupancy. This includes 26 beds each in ward-A and ward-B, 12 private rooms, 6 pediatric beds, 6 neuro-otology beds and 15 beds in ICU.
There are 6 equipped operating rooms of which 5 are dedicated neurosurgical OTs and 1 neuro-otology OT.
The department has awarded superspeciality degree (M.Ch) to 74 doctors till now.
Research along with clinical review has remained a thrust area and the department has published nearly 500 articles in various international and national journals & chapters in various books.
