Dr. Alok Kumar is an Additional Professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology. He is recognized for having expertise in 'Macrophage activation' and their function in brain viral infection and CNS injury. He completed his education in the field of biochemistry and continued his quest in the field of neuroscience and molecular immunobiology. Dr. Kumar conducted postdoctoral training at the Center for Shock, Trauma and Anaesthesiology Research (STAR), University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

He has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed publications. His work has garnered numerous awards, including the 'Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship Award' from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT, New Delhi) for research in 'Encephalitis (Japanese Encephalitis) viral infection', 'Prof. E. Vijayan Award' in Neuroscience for Best oral presentation of the paper, 'First place and Best poster award' in National Capital Area TBI Research Symposium at National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA, 'Scored among top twenty best research fellows' at National Neurotrauma Conference in Phoenix, USA and many travel awards from National Neurotrauma Symposium, USA, Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), Belgium and International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN), USA. His contribution to the scientific field of "CNS injury and Immune cell activation" is well acknowledged and highlighted in several USA media reports, for instance, "Mystery Brain Particles and their Role in Seeding Neuroinflammation", 2017; "Do Spinal Cord Injuries Cause Subsequent Brain Damage?", 2014; among others. He is an ad-hoc reviewer of several international neuroinfectious diseases, neurotrauma, and molecular biology journals. He has been a member of the National Neurotrauma Society (NNS), USA, Society for Neuroscience (SFN), USA, and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), France.

Dr. Kumar joined Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute (SGPGI) as a faculty and Ramalingaswami Fellow in 2018. He has recently received the First Research Day award for outstanding research at SGPGI Institute, Lucknow. In 2021, Dr. Kumar ranked among the world's top 2% scientists in an analysis published by Stanford University, USA (Baas, Jeroen; Boyack, Kevin; Ioannidis, John P.A. (2021).

As a Faculty member at SGPGI Dr. Kumar's current research work leveraging expertise in the area of biochemistry, cell biology, neuroscience, microbiology and extra cellular vesicles to understand how immune cell activation and their interaction with other cells is involved in cardiovascular diseases, ageing, neuroviral infection and neurotrauma. His research are/have been supported by the many extramural research grant agencies such as DBT, DHR, SERB and ICMR, New Delhi.
