The Dept. of Hematology was established at SGPGIMS in 2003 as a composite Dept. with both clinical and laboratory components. Prior to 2003, hematology services were offered at SGPGIMS from the Department of Immunology which had two major components- autoimmunity and immune (hematological) malignancies. In the year 1999, a Bone Marrow/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (BMT/HSCT) program was successfully established. Over the years there was a significant increase in the hematology and BMT/HSCT patients, which necessisated the need to create an independent Hematology Department. Thus, the 53rd Governing Body meeting of the Institute, held on 23.04.2002, decided to create a separate Dept of Hematology which became functional in June 2003. The Department is now a major referral center for patients with hematological disorders from the State of UP and neighbouring states.
The Dept. initiated stem cell research in the Institute in 2015 and established a Stem Cell Research Facility (SCRF), from a research grant obtained from Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India of approximately Rs 4 crores (PI: Dr Soniya Nityanand). Noting the progress of the SCRF, the U.P. Govt. sanctioned funds for establishment of a full blown Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC) in the Hematology Building which is operational since 2018.
On 16th October 2018 the Ho'nble Chief Minister of the State, Sri Aditya Narain Yogi Ji, inaugurated the building of the Center for Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation and Stem Cell Research Center. The Centre has the following 03 wings
