About Department

The Department of Anesthesiology provides state of the art care for patients undergoing varied types of surgical procedures. Because the discipline has become so subspecialized, faculties are available in areas such as cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, organ transplantation, pain management and palliative care. Department of Anesthesia provides perioperative service at 20 operating rooms for over 8500 patients per year for routine and emergency surgery.

In the 20 bedded postoperative and intensive care units, a team of specialist and nurses provide state-of-the-art life supporting treatments for all postoperative as well as critically ill patients. Emergency service of the department cater to referral services of the entire institute related to maintenance of invasive lines and monitoring, respiratory care and ventilatory care. Anesthesia department also facilitate procedure at peripheral areas like intervention radiology, intervention cardiac cath lab, intervention endoscopic procedure etc. A preanaesthesia checkup clinic in the department assist in the assessment of competence of patient undergo anesthesia.

The pain medicine at SGPGI offers a comprehensive range of service for patients with acute or chronic pain. The acute pain service is functioning since 2002 with the aim to provided excellence in acute and postoperative pain relief, to educate residents in the management of acute pain and to further clinical research in the fields of pain management and regional anesthesia regular pain clinics are on all working days intervention pain procedures have been performed in the OPD under USG guidance as day care procedures, will complex intervention pain procedure are performed under C arm guidance in operation room. CT guided procedures are also done in regular basis and is regularly performing radiofrequency lesioning for intractable pain Palliative care service were initiated by department of Anesthesiology in 2009 by grant provided by pallium India. Palliative care is provided to the patients on OPD basis. Home visits are also provided to patients once a week. A 24 hours helpline number is available to patients in need.
