The School of Telemedicine & Biomedical Informatics has been established by the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow with the financial support of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication & IT, Government of India with the objective of creating human resources in various fields of Healthcare Information Technology e.g. Telemedicine, Hospital Information Management System, Public Health Informatics, Nursing Informatics, Digital Medical Library, Medical Multimedia & Animation, Bioinformatics, Medical Imaging Informatics, Cancer Informatics, Artificial Intelligence & Clinical Decision support system in Medicine, e-learning in Medicine, Surgical Informatics, Virtual Reality & Medical Simulation etc. This is the first academic institution of it’s kind dedicated exclusively to the emerging arena of health care informatics in a public funded academic medical institutional setup.
Initially Diploma courses of one year duration in five disciplines i.e. Telemedicine, Hospital Information System, Public Health Informatics, Nursing Infor-matics and Digital Medical Library will be started in the academic year 2009. All these courses are duly approved by the Statutory Bodies of the Institute and the Diploma will be provided by the SGPGIMS, a Deemed University.
a. Setting up Best Practices in Tele-care for population at large and Tele-education to supplement knowledge and skill gap of needy healthcare professionals in the country and developing world at large.
b. Developing trained human resources in the fields of Digital Health trough structured curriculum based courses, sponsored training, fellowship etc.
c. Advancing various e learning modules over National Medical College Network and Cloud enabled mobile learning programme. Popularizing the modules developed at SGPGI.
d. Designing and deploying ICT integrated collaborative Learning Work Spaces.
e. Setting up Advanced Telemedicine Research Programmes aiming at Population health, Safety of patients, Tele-epidemiology, Surgical Informatics etc.
f. Introducing concept of Virtual Hospital and outreach progamme-Rural Access to Affordable Healthcare Adopting Telemedicine (RAAHAT) in collaboration with Institute and Health development of GoUP.
g. Expanding Medical College Network from existing three medical collages to all the medical colleges of the state.
h. Creating a Centre of Excellence in Digital Health in India and applying to WHO for declaring it as a WHO Collaborating Centre.
