About Department

Transfusion medicine is a multidisciplinary area concerned with the proper use of blood and blood components in the treatment of human diseases. The Department of Transfusion Medicine at this Institute was established in 1989 by Dr JG Jolly. The department was established as a state of the art facility to provide blood transfusion services to train medical and para-medical personnel in related areas and to function as an apical medical and research department in the country in this field. According to the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) strict adherence to quality control at all phases of donor selection, donor room procedures, screening and processing of blood and serological procedures for grouping and typing of blood are being followed. The department took a lead in starting a postgraduate course in Transfusion Medicine leading to award of MD degree (Immunohematology & Blood Transfusion) for the first time in the country. Besides an MD program the department is also running a Post-Doctoral course of one year duration (PDCC) in Apheresis Technology and Blood Component Therapy. A new course for technicians- MSc Medical Laboratory Technology (Transfusion Medicine) has also been started recently. The department has taken a lead in blood bank automation especially in blood component separation and pretransfusion testing. It also has specialized laboratories-Immunohematology laboratory, NAT laboratory, Quality Control and Hemostasis laboratory and Molecular laboratory which provide highly modern laboratory and clinical facilities.Therapeutic plasma exchange in select categories of patients and plasma donation facilities are available besides plateletpheresis procedures in the department.

The department is recognized as Regional Blood Transfusion Center & State of Art- Model Blood Bank by NACO, MOH & FW , Govt. of India
