Professor and Head,
Department of Pediatric Endocrinology
SGPGIMS, Lucknow
This is the first department of pediatric endocrinology in the country, created with the approval of the 96th Governing Body of the institute in September 2022. Prior to this, pediatric endocrinology was a unit of the Department of Endocrinology, under which we have been serving children up to the age of 18 years for the last 35 years. In addition, we are running a one-year Post Doctoral Certificate Course in Pediatric Endocrinology since 2001 under the same unit, the first structured pediatric endocrinology training program in the country.
We attract patients not only from our state of Uttar Pradesh, but also from neighbouring states and countries, including Nepal as well.
The childhood and adolescent age group (below 18 years) constitutes 42 % of the population of India. A rough estimate is that there are at least 3 million children in India suffering from pediatric endocrine disorders.
Our mission is to provide the state-of-the-art empathetic pediatric endocrinology and diabetes services to all eligible children. Secondly, to generate skilled and knowledgeable manpower as pediatric endocrinologists, diabetes nurse educators, pediatric endocrine nurses, and diabetes and endocrine nutritionists. Thirdly, to conduct research relevant to the region and the country.
Fourthly, to create preventive and therapeutic patient education material in our local language, Hindi, and make it freely available on all kinds of platforms. Fifth, to take our expertise to the periphery, three-tier cities and districts, by working and coordinating with health care personnel at those places.
