About Department

The Department of Orthopaedics at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, came into existence vide Government Order No. 1/802478/2024/71-20099/26/2023, dated 21st November 2024. The establishment of the department marked a significant milestone in the Institute’s continued commitment to advancing specialized medical education, research, and comprehensive patient care in the field of musculoskeletal sciences.

Initially Conceived as part of the Apex Trauma Centre vide G.O. No. 59/20173101/71-217-P-17/2008 dated 31st August 2017, the speciality of orthopaedics focused on providing comprehensive orthopaedic and trauma services, integrating advanced clinical care, education, and research.

The Department has been envisioned as a centre of excellence dedicated to the management of complex orthopaedic trauma, reconstructive surgery, joint preservation, arthroplasty, spine surgery, and musculoskeletal oncology. It aims to integrate state-of-the-art clinical services, advanced academic training, and cutting-edge research in orthopaedics under one roof.

Clinical Services

The department provides round-the-clock orthopedic services covering the full spectrum of musculoskeletal problems. The key areas of clinical expertise include:

  • Trauma and Fracture Management:
Comprehensive management of simple and complex fractures, including polytrauma, pelvic-acetabular injuries, and periarticular fractures using modern fixation systems and evidence-based protocols.
  • Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement):
Primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty are performed using advanced techniques and implants to restore function and improve quality of life.
  • Arthroscopy and Sports Injuries:
Minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures for ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair, shoulder instability, and sports-related injuries.
  • Spine Surgery:
Comprehensive care for spinal trauma, deformities, infections, and degenerative disorders using both open and minimally invasive approaches.
  • Pediatric Orthopaedics:
Diagnosis and management of congenital, developmental, and post-traumatic conditions in children.
  • Orthopaedic Oncology and Reconstruction:
Limb-salvage procedures and tumor reconstruction for bone and soft-tissue malignancies.

The department follows a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with departments such as Radiology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Clinical Immunology, Rehabilitation, and Anesthesiology to provide holistic patient care.

Academic and Training Activities

The department is actively engaged in teaching and training of postgraduate and super-specialty students. It offers:

  • MS Orthopaedics: 3 seats approved by NMC
  • PDAF “Sports Medicine” 2 years Post Doctoral Course, 1 seat / year
  • Post-Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC) in Orthopaedic (Pelvis , Hip & Knee Injuries): 2 seats/year
  • Structured training programs emphasizing competency-based learning, clinical decision-making, and research methodology.
  • Regular academic activities including seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, cadaveric workshops, and skill enhancement programs.

The department is committed to nurturing future orthopedic surgeons with sound knowledge, refined surgical skills, and ethical clinical practice.

Research and Innovation

Research is an integral component of departmental activities. The faculty and residents are involved in clinical, biomechanical, and translational research focusing on:

  • Fracture fixation biomechanics and implant design
  • Finite Element Analysis of orthopedic constructs
  • Biologic augmentation in bone and cartilage healing
  • Outcomes in trauma and joint replacement surgery

Several research papers from the department are published in indexed national and international journals, reflecting its strong academic foundation and contribution to orthopedic science.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The department is supported by modern infrastructure that includes:

  • Advanced modular operating theaters with laminar airflow
  • C-arm and image-guided surgical systems
  • Arthroscopy and navigation equipment
  • Orthopedic Trauma HDU/ICU and Rehabilitation unit
  • Digital X-ray, PACS, and access to 3D printing and biomechanical lab facilities
