Department of Maternal and Reproductive Health was established under Prime Minister Swasthya Suraksha Yojana in 2009. The department looks after the women before, during and after pregnancy.
Prevention of pregnancy complications by screening before and during pregnancy is the major thrust area of the department.Women with known medical and surgical disorders like diabetes, hypertension, operated or unoperatedheart disease, liver diseases, immunological disorder etc are looked after before planning pregnancy and during pregnancy. Couple with bad obstetric history such as repeated pregnancy loss, previous baby with malformations, syndromes or mental sub-normality are managed tohave a successful outcome in current or future pregnancy.
Structural normality in the fetus is ensured by detailed ultrasound examination. Diseases in the fetus are identified by various non-invasive and invasive prenatal techniques such as chorionic villous sampling, amniocentesis, cordocentesis etc. The department has established itself as the referral centre for treatment of various fetal conditions like fetal anaemia, goitre, congenital heart block, supraventricular tachycardia, polyhydramnios etc.The department has done rare fetal procedures like embolization of large placental tumor, fetal shunt for pleural effusion and amnioinfusion for severe oligohydramnios. Multifetal pregnancy reduction and selective fetal reductions are done to improve the pregnancy outcome in twin, triplet, or higher order pregnancy.
The department is a referral centre for complicated pregnancies. Apart from the state of UttarPradesh, patients are referred from neighbouring countries and states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam etc.
It is one of the centres in India to have training course in Maternal and Fetal Medicine which will help in generating more skilled manpower in this field to improve maternal and neonatal health indicators of the country. Post MD/MS (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) doctors from both government and private sectorsare being trained as observer for 3-6 months duration in the department.
