Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences has been established under the State Legislature Act in 1983 and is named after Sanjay Gandhi.It was created by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a centre of excellence for providing medical care, education and research of the highest order. The institute is situated in a 550 acres (2.2 square kilometres) campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km from the main city. Lucknow is located about 500km east of New Delhi and is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow is famous for its Nawabi culture, Mughlai cuisine and intricate chikan work, a form of fine embroidery.
The Institute provides postgraduate training to medical and nonmedical professionals. The training programmes lead to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowships, postdoctoral certificate Programmes in various disciplines. In addition, it offers senior residency training programmes. B.Sc. Nursing course and BSc / MSc paramedical technology Programmes in allied sciences are offered by the College of Medical Technology.The Institute is an autonomous body and awards degrees which are recognised by the Medical Council of India. The Institute functions as a State University and is member of the Association of Indian Universities and is recognised by University Grants Commission.

10/05/2025: National Seminar on Best Procurement Practices in Government Healthcare Organisations
The Department of Hospital Administration, SGPGIMS organized the events: An Update" under the guidance of Professor (Dr.) R. Harsh Vardhan.
This was followed by the address of Director, SGPGIMS, Prof. (Dr.) R.K. Dhiman. Prof Dhiman shared the evolving procurement practices at the institute over time, major innovations, challenges faced and future plans to make the process more digital and streamlined
05/05/2025: SGPGIMS Celebrated World Hand Hygiene Day and 37th Foundation Day of Department of Microbiology with CME on Hand Hygiene
In observance of World Hand Hygiene Day 2025 and to mark the 37th Foundation Day of the Department of Microbiology, SGPGIMS, Lucknow, organized a CME program focused on "Hand Hygiene and Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) using Automated Syndromic Panels."
Chief Guest Padmashri Prof. RK Dhiman addressed the gathering on importance of Hand hygiene. He emphasized on simple hand washing rather than wearing gloves when performing any type of clinical procedures on patients.
03/05/2025: World Hand Hygiene Day underscores the critical role of clean hands in healthcare settings. The theme provided by WHO for 2025 is "It Might Be Gloves, It's Always Hand Hygiene!"

23/04/2025: Matra Shakti Saves Three Lives: Husband Served in the Indian Army, Wife Created a New Chapter in Humanity
In a moving example of service and sacrifice, the 60-year-old wife of a retired Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), who tragically met with a road traffic accident on Rae Bareli Road, gave the gift of life to three individuals in her final moments.
With immense courage, her husband made the noble decision to donate her organs.
Director Prof R. K. Dhiman congratulated the SOTTO team for it's successful endeavour.
19/04/2025: Dept. of Hepatology Celebrated 'World Liver Day' & Workshop knowledge and awareness about the growing burden of fatty liver diseases
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof RK Dhiman, Director, SGPGI, Professor of Hepatology; Prof Devender Gupta, CMS, SGPGI, and Prof Amit Goel, HOD, Hepatology.
This seminar was attended by more than 100 medical students and young physicians from various medical college.
